I was a builder in Mogadishu. My country is in ruins. I want to build things again.
My husband was killed in Mogadishu by al-Shabaab because he refused to forbid me from playing football. I will play sports and find joy in my life. I want to be a football player.
My father was killed in Addis Ababa during the 2005 elections. I’ve lost my job as a construction worker and I’ve been sleeping on the street. I will go to Yemen or Saudi to work and send money to my family. I would rather die in the sea than to continue without hope. I want to be a man who provides for his family.
I was beaten in Hargeisa because I am a member of a minority clan. My dream is to become a journalist.
I’ve survived even though there is still shrapnel in my skull. In Mogadishu everyone shooting at each other and normal people like me dying. Now I want to be a singer.
